Ulla Johnson: Inside the Production Process
The story of a collection is written long before it reaches the runway. Supporting four consecutive Ulla Johnson seasons, I helped orchestrate the product development process—from sample evolution to production execution—through meticulous organization, technical rigor, and collaborative problem-solving.
Supporting the production of four consecutive seasonal collections—Autumn/Winter 2025, Resort 2026, Spring/Summer 2026, and Autumn/Winter 2026—I played a key role in ensuring products progressed seamlessly from development to production. Working alongside Production and Technical Design teams, I managed the movement of samples from the Salesman Sample (SMS) stage through bulk production, maintaining accurate documentation, monitoring work-in-progress (WIP) reports, and preparing garments for fittings with meticulous attention to detail. Beyond sample management, I maintained seasonal material composition charts, analyzed SKU data in Excel, organized fabric and trim libraries, coordinated domestic and international shipments, and facilitated vendor logistics to keep development timelines on track. By balancing operational precision with cross-functional collaboration, I helped streamline the production process and supported the successful execution of each collection while upholding the brand's standards for quality, organization, and product integrity.
The Art of Feather Work
The Spring/Summer 2026 Collection introduces a defining collaboration with the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, drawing inspiration from the visionary works of Helen Frankenthaler. Reinterpreting Western Dream (1957), Moontide(1968), and Nature Abhors a Vacuum (1973), the collection translates her signature atmosphere and fluidity into fabric and form.
Billowing silhouettes, weightless textures, and luminous color palettes move through draped georgette, sheer organza, and satin-faced silk. Ethereal yet expressive, the collection unfolds in three movements—an exploration of light, motion, and modern femininity infused with radiant energy.Behind every finished ostrich feather top and dress was a meticulous production process that demanded both operational precision and hand craftsmanship. I supported these statement pieces from the earliest stages of development through production, assisting with bulk material orders, coordinating the receipt and review of samples from manufacturing partners in China, and ensuring each milestone remained aligned with the production timeline. At the heart of the process was the painstaking preparation of more than 4,000 individual ostrich feathers, each carefully hand-bound into uniform bundles before being applied to the garments. The experience offered an intimate view into the level of artistry, coordination, and technical execution required to transform delicate raw materials into finished luxury garments, where every detail—no matter how small—contributed to the integrity of the final collection.
